2017 Ford Explorer

Serving Columbus, Westerville, and Gahanna, OH

Large SUV models offer a great deal of room for the entire family, but not all of them have a third row of seating. The Ford Explorer has always been a bestseller because it indeed has a third row and seats seven comfortably. It's also a well-built vehicle that can stand up to just about anything that roads and off-road terrain can throw in its way. Over the years, the Explorer has been refined every few years and now comes with a load of standard convenience features not found on many rival models.

New for the 2017 Ford Explorer is a Sport Appearance package that is sure to please buyers looking for some snazzy upgrades for the interior and exterior. Suede and leather upholstery is included with this special package. The Sync® 3 infotainment interface is also new for the current model year. If you're in the market for a nicely crafted, spacious SUV, remember to add the 2017 Ford Explorer to your short list.

The standard engine on the 2017 Explorer is a 3.5L V6 that produces a total of 290 horsepower. Front-wheel drive is also standard, but you can choose all-wheel drive if you wish, even on the base trim. If you opt for the latter, you get hill start assist and the driver-selectable traction system. A turbocharged 2.3L engine is also available, and with this option you get better fuel economy while losing only 10 horsepower. The Sport and Platinum trims come with a turbocharged V6 that makes 365 horsepower. Six-speed automatic transmission is standard across the board. The 2017 Ford Explorer rides smoothly even over bumpy pavement, and the interior remains very quiet even at freeway speeds. If you go for the turbocharged V6, you will enjoy the quickest acceleration in this vehicle segment.

Nicely appointed, the 2017 Ford Explorer comes with such standard features as cruise control, air conditioning, rear climate controls, and an eight-way power driver's seat. The middle row of seats is 60/40 split-folding and the rear seats are 50/50 split. The rear seating area is quite spacious, and soft-touch materials abound. The thick roof pillars and high ceiling will appeal to riders as they give the impression of total safety and security. If you choose one of the uplevel trims, standard features include a power front passenger seat, leather trim and full leather upholstery with the Sport Appearance package, remote control front windows, and power-adjustable pedals. Second-row captain's chairs increase the available space dramatically, and those who choose this configuration over the fixed bench seats will be quite pleased.

The new Sync® 3 infotainment system is a dramatic improvement when it comes to high-tech features that come standard on the Ford Explorer. The base trim has a small 4.2-inch color display, but upgrading to the XLT or above trims gets you the Sync® 3 and a much larger 8-inch screen. A six-speaker stereo is standard, but you can move up to a much nicer 12-speaker Sony system if you wish. Dual USB chargers and a 110-volt power outlet can also be added on.

Every 2017 Ford Explorer comes with anti-lock brakes, traction control, and trailer sway control. Front-seat side airbags, side-curtain airbags, and a front-passenger knee airbag are also included on all trims. All Explorers comes standard with rear-view camera, but you can choose the 180-degree front camera as an add-on option. All but the base trim come with rear parking sensors. The full driver awareness package that includes forward collision warning and blind-spot monitoring is available on the Limited and Sport trims and comes standard on the Platinum version. The Explorer earned five stars out of a possible five for overall crash protection.

A well-constructed, large-size SUV that is perfect for hauling the entire family around town or around the country, the 2017 Ford Explorer is also a good value from an investment standpoint.
