The Ford Focus is an affordable compact model, and its long history of success is validated in customer and critic reviews. Of course, the popular Focus model isn't the only choice in a vehicle bearing this name. Sometimes forgotten are the sporty variants, the Focus ST and RS versions. The ST is a performance-oriented version of the Focus hatchback, and the RS steps up the game with its flashy exterior and powerful engine.

Both models will appeal to those who want something more in a compact hatchback. The standard features of the regular model Focus hatchback are included, but there's the addition of style and performance that few other compacts can match. Check out the following comparison of the two models.

Performance

Both the 2018 Ford Focus ST and RS models come with a more powerful engine that what is found on the other Focus versions. Both models feature six-speed manual transmission and turbocharged engine power. The ST comes with a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine rated at 252 horsepower. The exciting RS model is fitted with a turbocharged 2.3L inline-four engine that produces 350 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. The RS also features torque-vectoring all-wheel drive. Both models accelerate quickly, and both are renowned for their precise, responsive steering. The ST boasts superb stability control calibration, and the RS, with its all-wheel drive, offers the firmest grip of any vehicle in its class.

Standard Features

The 2018 Ford Focus ST is offered in a single trim, but there are lots of optional add-on packages. Standard features include air conditioning, front sport seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a rearview camera, Bluetooth, Sync voice controls, and a 4.2-inch central display screen. The rear seats are 60/40-split folding, and the cloth upholstery is of very good quality. The 2018 Focus RS comes with a high-mounted rear spoiler, carbon-fiber interior accents, dual-zone climate control, and heated front seats. A rearview camera and the Sync 3 infotainment system are also standard. Both models have plenty of cargo space behind the rear seats, and the volume increases significantly when the rear seats are folded. Both models are available only as a hatchback.

Package Options

This is where the two models differ the most. The 2018 Ford Focus ST model can be customized via the purchase of either the ST2 or ST3 packages. The former adds on xenon headlights, a sunroof, leather trim accents, Recaro front sport seats, and an 8-inch screen display. The ST3 package adds all of the features of the ST2 package plus full leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, multicolor interior ambient lighting, and navigation. The 2018 Ford Focus RS model isn't eligible for many additional equipment options, but buyers can select from several makes of sport tires. There's a Winter Wheel and Tire package that replaces the wheels with smaller 18-inch ones and also fits those wheels with Michelin winter tires. A moonroof is another stand-alone option.
