The 2018 Ford Flex is a spacious midsize SUV that earns high marks for its spacious cargo capacity and cabin, powerful engine options, and intuitive infotainment system. This year, the Flex is offered in three separate trims: SE, SEL, and Limited. If you're shopping for a Ford Flex, here's what you need to know about the similarities and differences in the SEL and Limited trims.

Interior Features

Both the SEL and Limited trims are well-equipped with the latest automotive technology offerings. Each include Ford's upgraded SYNC®3 infotainment system, which features an easy to use touchscreen, seamless smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and voice-activated navigation along with two USB ports. If you opt for the Limited trim, you'll also enjoy the sound provided by the premium 12-speaker Sony audio system.

Both models are also packed with comfort and convenience features and innovative upgrades. The SEL boasts heated, power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity key entry with push-button start, and a garage door opener. The Limited includes all that plus leather upholstery in the first and second rows, a power liftgate, and a household-style power outlet. Each model is eligible for additional upgrades that include second-row captain's chairs, a towing package, and a panoramic glass roof with an integrated moonroof. In addition to these options, the Limited trim can be upgraded with a heated steering wheel, climate-controlled front seats, a power-adjustable steering wheel, and one-touch folding for the third row.

Safety

If you want the latest driver assistance technology, the Limited trim of the Ford Flex is your best bet. It comes standard with blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, and can be upgraded with active park assist, adaptive cruise control, and forward collision warning. Blind spot monitoring is available as an upgrade for the SEL trim. Both models boast high crash test ratings in four out of five categories from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Performance

With the SEL trim of the 2018 Flex, you'll enjoy the power of a 287-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The Flex Limited is equipped with this engine as well, but is also the only trim that can be equipped with the available twin-turbo V6, which blasts out 365 horses. The base engine gets an EPA-estimated 16 city/23 highway miles per gallon, while the twin turbo offers 15/21 city highway mpg. Reviewers say you'll enjoy a smooth, agile ride with both the standard front-wheel drive and the optional all-wheel-drive system.
