The 2017 Ford Mustang vs 2017 Chevrolet Camaro. What's Your Choice?

Serving Columbus, Westerville, and Gahanna, OH

If you're looking for a muscle car that doubles as a true performance machine, Ford and Chevrolet have you covered. Actually, there aren't many entrants left in this vehicle class, not even when you add in the foreign models. It's not because of lack of interest, it's just that most folks today are more concerned about safety features, fuel efficiency, and passenger-friendly interiors.

Even so, several models do indeed stand out in the muscle car limelight, two of these being the Ford Mustang and the Chevrolet Camaro. Both have a long, successful history and a loyal following. However, Ford seems to have been more receptive to consumer demands than Chevrolet, particularly in the areas of passenger comfort, interior design, and high-tech advancements. In these categories as well as overall long-term value, the Ford Mustang crosses the finish line first. Even though the 2017 Mustang hasn't undergone much of a design change from last year's model, it still offers user-friendly features and exudes classy elegance in addition to its throaty roar.

Interior Features

Both the 2017 Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro are a world apart from the models bearing these names in the 1970s. The models are much more nicely designed and include features you'd never expect in decades past. The Camaro features top-quality materials on the inside, and you immediately notice that the interior curves and slopes are closely matched to what is found on the Corvette. However, you can forget about seating two adults comfortably in the back seats. Visibility isn't a strong point, either. The side windows are tiny, the result being huge blind spots. The 2017 Ford Mustang isn't a class leader in terms of back seat roominess, either, but at least adults won't get cramped. Materials quality is superb, and Ford continues to design the front dash with the dual-cowl look.

High-Tech Features

The 2017 Camaro’s standard features include a rearview camera, keyless ignition, Bluetooth, and OnStar. You also get a generously-sized display screen even on the base trim. However, the quality of the buttons and gauges are modest at best, and some of the controls feel rather cheap and flimsy to the touch. The dials are a bit difficult to control as well. The 2017 Ford Mustang offers such standard features as a rearview camera, Sync voice controls, Bluetooth, and MyKey parental controls. You can upgrade to the EcoBoost Premium trim and enjoy heated mirrors with horse lasers, a wonderful nine-speaker audio system, satellite radio, and the acclaimed Sync 3 infotainment system with its award-winning 8-inch screen display. All in all, the upgraded features are worth it because the uplevel trims aren't all that more expensive. The uplevel Camaro trims come with special package options, but you'll pay a lot more to get the extra high-tech features.

Long-Term Value

Both the Camaro and Mustang are collectors' favorites because of their strong attachment to the American muscle car culture. The Mustang is perhaps a little better constructed, and the chassis, suspension, and body frame withstand the thousands of bumps and road dips a little bit better and for a lot longer than the Camaro. One thing is for sure, a well-kept Mustang draws more interest from used car buyers than does the Camaro.

If you're in the market for a performance muscle car, both of these models are certainly on your list. However, if you haven't driven a Mustang lately, now is the time to climb aboard and see what you've been missing.
