Considering the popularity of the 2016 Ford Fusion lineup, all Ford needed to do was continue its winning streak. Yet the 2017 update is the most significant since the current generation arrived four years ago. The revisions allow the Fusion to continue at the forefront of contemporary trends and technology. Two new editions push the affordable Fusion into competition with luxury sedans.

Performance

The 2016 edition assigns a 175-horsepower four cylinder engine to the S and SE. These engines earn 32 mpg highway. Boosting horsepower and torque, a turbo four earns 34 mpg highway. It boosts city mileage with an automatic stop-start system for saving fuel in the drive-through, at red lights or during stop and go traffic. Higher editions have a standard 240-horsepower turbo. Proving itself as good as a V6, it creates 270 lb.-ft. of torque. Saving fuel, it earns 31 mpg highway.

For 2017, the Fusion offers all of these choices and adds another. You can get the new Fusion V6 Sport. Ford harnesses the power of a turbo 2.7-liter V6 in this European-styled ride. It has all-wheel drive instead of the typical front-wheel drive. Driving enthusiasts can command 325 horsepower and 380 lb.-ft. of torque. This is the same power outlay you will find in one of the Ford F150s. Standard curve control helps maintain stability even when this car goes into a curve at speed.

Interior

The 2016 Fusion cabins are known for their high quality materials at all three trim levels. For 2017, there is an elevated fit and finish. You will also find more space up front where Ford has utilized a rotary shifter. While some 2016 editions have push button ignition, all 2017 editions have it. These changes allowed Ford to restyle the cupholders and create more storage bins. The MyFord Touch interface has been replaced by the new Sync 3 infotainment system. There are smartphone-style menus to reduce the time needed for interface. There are less physical buttons and more virtual buttons, streamlining the process even more. Edmunds writes that the changes have made dash entertainment quicker and easier to use. With the introduction of a new Platinum trim, the 2017 Fusion feels more like a luxury car with its top grade leather and long list of must-have amenities.

Safety and Automation

The 2017 Fusion earned five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration just as the 2016 had done. Both editions offer a long list of crash avoidance and automation features. It starts with a blind spot monitor, a lane watch and an automated lane assist to reduce typical side swipe dangers. During reverse maneuvers, the rear cross-traffic alert warns drivers about approaching cars. Already a rearview camera is standard across the 2016 and 2017 lineup. An autobrake responds when the driver doesn't heed a forward collision warning. Adaptive cruise control can regulate speed even in stop and go traffic conditions. Increasing the automation available in 2017, Ford has expanded the parking system. Now it can provide both parallel and perpendicular parking assistance. Exterior aids include automatic wipers and a self-regulating high beam system.
