Model Highlights
Since Mazda introduced the Miata in 1989, the MX-5 has continued to improve with each successive generation. In 2006 Mazda redesigned the MX-5 Miata from the ground up, the second time it had done so during the car's lifespan, with an eye toward reducing weight and increasing "fun." The new MX-5 is still rear wheel drive, lightweight, and quick. And with its perfect 50/50 weight distribution, the MX-5 handles even better than before. The car's only engine, a 2.0L four-cylinder with variable valve technology, produces 166 horsepower and 140 ft-lbs of torque. While these figures may sound slight in comparison to some of the MX-5's competitors, Mazda successfully relies on its 50/50 weight distribution and well-spaced gear ratios to ensure a spirited driving experience. The Miata has always been a favorite for amateur racers, which is why Mazda sells the base MX-5 as a stripped-down version suitable for track use. The car comes equipped with the second generation's five-speed manual transmission, but power windows and a CD player mean the car can be driven to and from the raceway. The Sport version gains a leather-wrapped steering wheel and air conditioning. The Touring trim adds a six-speed manual and 205/45R17 rubber on alloy wheels. Remote keyless entry and power door locks round out the convenience features. For $500, a performance package is available that includes Bilstein sport shocks and a limited slip differential. The top-of-the-line Grand Touring style provides heated leather seating and Bose speakers. The 2007 MX-5's biggest addition for 2007, however, is a power retractable hard top. Mazda managed to execute this feature well, adding only 77 pounds to the car's weight and keeping overall cargo capacity the same as the soft-top version. It can be ordered on any trim but the base.
