The 2017 Ford Fusion vs 2017 Honda Accord. What's Your Choice?

Serving Columbus, Westerville, and Gahanna, OH

Mid-size sedans and coupes occupy a huge segment of the vehicle market, and choosing which model works best for you can be one of the most frustrating experiences of your life. Model reviews for this vehicle class usually focus on engine choices, safety ratings, passenger comfort, and available high-tech options.

Two of the most popular models in this class are the Ford Fusion and Honda Accord. The latter has been a fan favorite for more than 35 years, but the recent introduction of the Fusion into the Ford lineup has created quite the sensation. For a price tag that's often less than the Accord, Fusion buyers enjoy a wider choice of engines, more user-friendly high-tech features, and a more at-ease feeling when it comes to operating the controls in general. Both models should be looked at carefully, but after taking a 2017 Ford Fusion for a test drive, you'll begin to notice some subtle differences that place the Fusion one level above the Accord.

Engine and Powertrain Choices

The 2017 Honda Accord can be purchased with the standard 2.7L engine that produces a total of 185 horsepower. A CVT-equipped Accord with this engine gets excellent fuel mileage, about 36 mpg on the highway to be exact. However, the only other engine choice is a 3.5L V6, and if you choose this power source on the coupe version, expect only about 28 mpg fuel efficiency. The 2017 Ford Fusion offers no less than four different engines, the most frugal being a 2.5L power source. You can opt for the 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder, a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder, or a turbocharged 2.7L V6 if you wish. You also have the option of all-wheel drive on the uplevel trims, something that isn't offered on the Honda Accord. This makes the Fusion an all-around better vehicle for bad weather driving.

High-Tech Features

The base trim 2017 Ford Fusion comes with standard audio and phone voice commands, Bluetooth connectivity, smartphone app integration, a rearview camera, and full power accessories. If you choose the SE trim with the Technology package, you enjoy the Sync 3 technology interface with its 8-inch screen, an 11-speaker sound system, and enhanced voice control. Two USB ports are also included with this package and are an optional add-on to the uplevel trims. The 2017 Honda Accord comes with such standard features as Bluetooth and a rearview camera, but the upgraded sound system and more advanced screen display setup requires a much larger increase in sticker price. Only the EX and EX-L trims offer the full driver awareness systems as standard. An expensive Honda Sensing package must be purchased otherwise.

Both of these models are fun to drive and handle nicely, but you'll want to take note of the differences when it comes to using the driver-assist systems. The 2017 Honda Accord's optional touch display screen is finicky to use and doesn't always respond well. The collision warning system is far too sensitive, and the adaptive cruise control doesn't perform well when it comes to maintaining or regaining a specifically set vehicle speed. The 2017 Ford Fusion has one of the most user-friendly interfaces on the market, namely the Sync 3 system, and the driver awareness systems are quick-responding as well as accurate.
