Does the 2017 Ford F-150 still surpass the Toyota Tundra? In this review, we will talk about how Ford has changed and how the Tundra has stayed the same. We think you will appreciate the Ford F150 on its own merits.

Last year, the Ford F-150 was named North American Truck of the Year. This year it holds the top spot at U.S. News and World Report. Plus it earned Best Truck for the Money from the same magazine. Kelley Blue Book has awarded it Best Buy for three years in a row. The truck also earned Autobytel Best Truck Award and JD Power Most Dependable. F150s are considered Most Wanted by Edmunds. Reviewers, such as Edmunds and U.S. News, write that the Toyota Tundra lags behind the class in power, fuel economy, and safety.

Strength and Security

For years, Toyota Tundras have had two V8 powertrains. The first is a 4.6-liter that creates 310 horsepower and 327 lb.-ft. of torque. The other choice is a 5.7-liter V8. The engine delivers 381 horsepower and 401 lb.-ft. of torque. Top tow rating is 10,500 pounds. Both come paired with a six-speed transmission. City and highway fuel economy is under 20 mpg. Also offering a six-speed, the 2017 Ford F-150 just introduced a class-exclusive 10-speed automatic transmission. Tighter gear ratios certainly support the Ford powertrain, helping make more out of every horse under the hood. Next generation Ecoboost V6 engines save gasoline but pull and haul like V8s. For instance, the 3.5-liter Ecoboost twin turbo cranks out 375 horsepower nearly matching the Toyota Tundra and then surpasses the torque levels with a class-leading 470 lb.-ft. In fact, Ford F150s picked up 50 lb.-ft. compared to the 2016 model. Three other Ford engine choices include another Ecoboost V6, a regular V6, and a regular V8. Both Ecoboost units save even more fuel with stop-start capability at red lights. When properly equipped, maximum tow rating is 12,200 pounds. For better towing and better fuel economy, the 2017 Ford F-150 really does beat the Toyota Tundra.

While safety may not be the first thing on your mind when it comes to pickup trucks, it does make you feel better to know that the Ford F-150 has earned all five stars from the government safety testers. Equally impressive, the F150 two-row cabins have earned Top Safety Pick Plus from the insurance safety testers. The Tundra has earned neither of these awards. Furthermore, while the Tundra is offering a blind spot monitor, the F150 offers a full suite of crash avoidance features and several other systems that make it a better partner for individuals, families and work fleets. Ford is one of the first to offer a collision warning system on a full-sized pickup. Another first is the lane warning system. Relieving stress, an available advanced cruise control can adapt to conditions and brake when necessary for safety. Worksite maneuvers are much easier with an available 360-degree camera system. It shows a driver every obstacle. Best of all, Ford has an exclusive dynamic hitch assist. With simple turns of a dial, the driver can maneuver the hitch into place, saving time and aggravation.
