A full-size SUV is perfect for the drivers who need extra passenger room and enhanced towing capabilities. The 2017 Ford Expedition remains one of the best options in the class. You can expect this smooth-riding powerhouse to keep everyone in your family comfortable. A number of premium features are now offered, including a dual-screen entertainment system and a 12-speaker Sony sound system.

The new Nissan Armada is also a top contender in the full-size SUV segment. Automotive journalists praise the Armada for its improved performance and rugged character. Let’s see how the 2017 Ford Expedition stacks up against the 2017 Nissan Armada.

2017 Ford Expedition Exterior

Performance

All versions of the Expedition are powered by a 3.5L EcoBoost engine. Ford tuned the turbocharged V-6 engine to produce 365 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. Meanwhile, the Armada’s V-8 engine produces 390 horsepower and 394 pound-feet of torque. Although the Armada is powerful, the Expedition’s pavement-crushing torque gives it a key advantage. With a maximum towing capacity of 9,200 pounds, the Expedition can confidently pull 700 pounds more than the Armada. In regards to acceleration, these full-size bruisers are equally as quick. One of the Armada’s main drawbacks is its poor fuel economy. While the Expedition can return an impressive 22 mpg on the highway, the Armada tops out at only 19 mpg. According to Edmunds and The Car Connection, the Armada's heavy steering makes it less rewarding to drive overall.

Interior Room

Ford designed the Expedition to offer the optimum amount of interior room. Its spacious cabin will definitely impress your friends and family. Unlike the Armada, the Expedition has a third-row seat that can actually accommodate adults. In fact, the Expedition provides a whopping 9.4 inches of legroom more than the Armada. Your third-row passengers can also enjoy an extra 1.9 inches of headroom. When taking a long road trip, the Expedition’s roomier dimensions will prove to be a major benefit. The Expedition offers the most cargo space as well. While the Armada has a total cargo volume of 98 cubic feet, the Expedition can provide a solid 108.3 cubic feet of storage space.

Safety

You can count on the 2017 Ford Expedition to provide the necessary crash protection. It was able to receive an outstanding, five-star safety rating. You will also benefit from a number of cutting-edge safety technologies. The Expedition comes standard with trailer sway control, which gives you enhanced security when towing a load. All versions of the Expedition feature Roll Stability Control. Meanwhile, Ford’s standard MyKey system enables parents to set limits for their teen drivers. Unfortunately, these safety innovations are not available on the Nissan Armada. Both SUVs offer a backup camera and blind-spot monitoring.

The 2017 Nissan Armada is clearly an improvement over the previous model. Nevertheless, it is unable to surpass the new Ford Expedition. The Expedition’s more impressive towing capabilities and roomier interior give it the edge. To see how the 2017 Expedition performs in the real world, contact Krieger Ford to schedule a test drive.
