What makes a good SUV? Whether it is the 2016 or 2017 Escape, the answers lie inside, under the hood and in the cabin. The crossover’s appeal includes a car-like feel with the essentials of any utility vehicle. In its mid-cycle update, you will find that the 2017 Escape is an even better example of a leading crossover. It is recommended by auto journalists such as Kelley Blue Book and U.S. News and World Report.

Technology

Praising the 2016 model, Kelley Blue Book writes that the Escape outdoes its competitors when it comes to technology. This year brings more tech than ever. First, let’s talk dash tech. The 2016 model debuted Sync®3 and Applink. These are considered very simple systems that anyone can use. For 2017, new additions include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. A related new feature is Ford Pass with Sync Connect. Using this system, drivers can access their car remotely via a smartphone app. Last year, the Escape offered a blind spot monitor and a rear cross-traffic alert. This year it is also offering a forward collision warning with an autobrake feature. Ford also adds a lane watch with a corresponding assist. Even the parking system has been expanded to include perpendicular as well as parallel parking. Another newbie is adaptive cruise control, regulating your speed to give you a break, even when things are stop and go.

Performance

With two turbos in the family, the 2016 Escape was praised for balancing true performance with fuel economy. Following up on the success of its 2016 predecessor, the Escape offers the 178-horsepower turbo. It earns 30 mpg highway fuel economy. The 2017 twin turbo delivers a higher rate of power outlay than before. Drivers command 245 horsepower, gaining 5 horses, and 275 lb.-ft. of torque, gaining 5 lb.-ft. Still it earns 29 mpg highway. Also, continuing its emphasis on top technology, both engines now have start-stop capability. This reduces city fuel use by cutting off the engine during long stops such as red lights or drive-thrus. It easily restarts when the Escape driver moves a foot from the brake. Of course, all-wheel drive is a favorite option in 2017 as it was in 2016.

Appearance

The 2016 model was often praised for its Euro-sleek good looks and sophisticated interior. For 2017, Ford takes that sophistication even further. The exterior has more curb appeal, and the interior has been completely redone. A more prominent grille hides the active grille shutters to help with fuel economy. A new aluminum hood helps lighten the load. Inside visual changes include new surfaces for a premium feel and appearance. Ergonomics dictated a repositioned shift lever to allow better access to climate controls. A new center-stack media bin puts a 12V power point and a USB port in an easy-to-use nook. A new electronic brake and push button start help reduce clutter. The front seats are re-contoured, and the steering wheel has more user-friendly controls. The 34-cu.ft. cargo hold can grow to 68 cu.ft. with the folding seats. A wide-open liftgate offers a hands-free function that is perfect for busy travelers.
