The popular 2017 Ford Focus comes in hatchback and sedan designs. Although you have to choose between the two, you won’t have to sacrifice anything. Both offer fun technologies, a sporty appearance, and good fuel economy. Safety is standard regardless of your choice.

The sedan and hatchback come with a 160-horsepower engine that earns up to 39 mpg highway. On the sedan, a three-cylinder EcoBoost turbo can save even more by earning 42 mpg highway. Sedans start out with a manual and offers a six-speed dual-clutch automatic, which is standard on the hatchback. If you love to drive, there are two more hatchback choices. The Focus ST engine generates 252 horsepower and has a top speed of 155 mph. A PowerShift automatic helps this fast car earn 31 mpg highway. If you want an even racier ride, the Focus RS hatchback earned 2017 AutoGuide Car of the Year. The car has an adjustable suspension and European-styled all-wheel drive. The remarkable powertrain kicks out 350 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque. To keep costs low, it has a stop-start system for reducing fuel during stop-and-go driving.

Size and Trims

Whether you choose the hatchback or the sedan, you will find a generous 90 cu.ft. of passenger space. The sedan has a 13.2-cu.ft. trunk while the hatchback has a 23.9-cu.ft. hold with a package tray. Beyond these differences, there are many similarities. The high quality cabins are packed with technology and high quality materials. On the dash, you get an LCD display and dual USB ports. Sync brings you audio streaming. A rearview camera shows you what’s behind the car. Sedans come in four editions, starting with the S. The base edition of the hatchback is the SE. These cars wear a rear spoiler, lightweight alloy wheels, and body-colored mirrors. SE standards include cruise control, a front center armrest, and rear air vents. SE editions also get more speakers, satellite radio capability and steering-wheel mounted auxiliary controls.

Whether it’s the sedan or hatchback, SEL editions add some fun features such as a sunroof and a 10-speaker Sony system. It also picks up automatic climate control, multi-color interior lighting, and a touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Leather-clad Titanium editions spoil the driver with a power seat, push button start, a heated steering wheel, a keyless entry pad, and heated side mirrors. Front seat riders get heated seats, and backseat riders gain a center armrest. The Focus also has an Electric edition in the Titanium trim.

Seven airbags are standard in both models. The Focus earned the top score when tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Crash avoidance features are available to keep you out of harm’s way. For instance, there is a blind spot monitor and a rear cross-traffic alert, keeping you aware of oncoming cars whether in forward or reverse. You can also take advantage of a lane departure warning to help keep the car safely in its lane. Making it unique in its class, the Focus also offers a self-parking system for parallel and perpendicular spaces.

If you want an affordable car that doesn’t ask you to compromise, you can take your pick the Ford Focus hatchback and sedan varieties. Stop by Krieger Ford for a test drive.
